and am interested in adding my 2 cents.  Looks like we share distant
relatives.   Just started family research (in earnest) a year ago after
retired from military service.  Much of my "ancient" info came from 
visit
with Joe E. Spann, Manager of  Polk Co, FL Historical & Genealogical 
Library
(he is from the branch that went South from NC).  Joe has noted some
fuzziness in the Spann line around John Spann "Captain" and his 
information
differs from what Joseph Earle Steadman has offered in his book.
